“Difficult Lies”-Imagination Rules

“Difficult” is in the eye of the beholder. If your ball is in a position where you cannot get the clubface on the ball with your “normal swing”, consider it “difficult i.e., a downhill lie for a player whose normal motion is a sweeping motion. In order to hit the ball from a downhill lie, your club will need to come at the ball from a steeper than normal angle. This is true, whether  you are playing a 20 yard shot or a 200 yard shot.

Liken it to hitting a nail with a hammer. If the nail is to be hit into a wall, the angle of the hammer, as it approaches the nail, will be close to horizontal. If the nail is in the floor, the angle of attack will be closer to vertical. Rather than trying to remember a series of “rules” for each and every lie (such as, in uphill or downhill lies, play the ball off the uphill foot, with your weight on the downhill foot, and have your swing follow the slope), use your imagination. Get a picture of the clubface coming into the ball. Picture the path of the backswing that will allow the clubface to get to the ball, the way you pictured it. Also, picture the shot you want to produce, with the stroke you are about to make. Obviously, if you are hitting your shot from a downhill lie, the clubface will have less loft on it when it hits the ball. You will usually need to use more loft from a downhill lie.

Rather than try to remember this as another “rule”, use your imagination. Get a picture of the shot. Your imagination will give you the “how” to hit it.
