More Golf Is Easy

So, why do golfers make things harder than they need to be ? FEAR. Yes fear. Aristotle said “You are what you do." That means that if you make a mistake, you are a mistake. If you make a mistake you are wrong. If you’re wrong there are negative consequences. I don’t know about you but when I was growing up negative consequences didn’t feel good. Have you ever heard the way a lot of golfers treat themselves after they miss a shot? “You jerk.” “You’re an idiot”etc.  How does that set you up for the next shot? If I were just a body, I wouldn’t work too well for a guy who was calling me a jerk and an idiot.

Lao Tsu (he wrote the TAO TE CHING over 6,000 years ago) said “You are not what you do. “And he didn’t even play golf. Mistakes are the way you learn. When you learned how to walk you fell down most of the time in the beginning, but since you hadn’t learned how to talk, no one could tell you you were doing it wrong. You couldn’t take it personally. Hericlitus (a Greek philosopher) said “The truth is in the error”. Those guys had a way with words. That simply means that you learn by making mistakes. That’s how you’re designed. Don’t run away from mistakes. Embrace them! Pay attention to them. They are your friends.

If you are going to get different results you need to have different behavior. Most people get that. What they don’t get is that if you’re going to change behavior, you need to change the way you see things.

Philosophy without technique is worthless. People learn what they are taught. If what you are doing isn’t working for you you need to change it. In order to change it, maybe you need to change the way you see things. We will get into more specifics in future postings. In the meantime, I welcome any feedback on anything that has been posted.

If By Rudyard Kipling

“If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same “.Jack Nicklaus bogeyed the 12th hole in the last round of the ’86 Masters on his way to one of the most exciting victories in his storied career. Instead of being disheartened by this bogey, he turned what might have been a “disaster” into a “triumph". Jack turned a negative into a positive. Shakespeare said “There is no good or bad. Only thinking makes it so “Jack took a circumstance which might have derailed his drive for the green jacket and used it to spur him on to victory. It all depended on the way he saw things. The way you see things is a matter of decision. Jack chose the way he saw things. The Chinese character for crisis is the same character for opportunity. The way you see it is up to you. Check out the website http://www.thesecret.tv .This may give you some insight into to how you see things. What you see is what you get.
