The PGA Merchandise Show starts Thursday, Jan. 25th in Orlando, Fl.” Anybody and everybody” in the golf business will be there to see and be seen. All kinds of outrageous claims will be made for all kinds of things. Hit it longer, straighter with less effort. Use this putter and make everything. Wear this charm and take strokes off your score. This teaching method will finally get you on track. Well, some of this stuff will do some of what they say it will do and some of it won’t.
The good news is YOU will still be the one playing the game. You will still be more effective with well designed, fitted equipment and effective techniques, but if this is going to be your year then you will need to change some of the things you do. Add one practice to your golf behavior this year that will help you day in and day out (for instance, stretching before and after you play). Eliminate one behavior that hurts you i.e. eating a high fat snack at the turn-you know-the cheeseburger or hot dog with the french fries, of course. I was once told by a student of mine that the difference between excellence and mediocrity are the little things.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled at the show for anything that I think might give us an edge-something we can actually use but if I find anything that will actually play the game for me, I’ll run like hell. Ain’t gonna happen.
