Golf Channel-Playing Lessons With The Pro

As far as I’m concerned, the best program on The Golf Channel is Playing Lessons with the Pro. A touring pro plays a few holes by himself and tells us what he’s thinking and what he’s doing. The other day I was working in my office with the TV on and in the morning I saw a show featuring Jesper Parnevick. In the afternoon I saw a show featuring Cory Pavin. The contrast was stark. Jesper kept talking about how difficult golf is and how you need a lot of luck to do well. Cory kept talking about how everything would be ok. If he missed a green he said it was no problem. He could get it up and down and he did.

Jesper could be considered an underachiever and Cory could be considered an overachiever. I believe the difference is in their outlook. I happen to like both of these players, I find Jesper refreshing, but I don’t share his view of the game. Jesper thinks things are hard and that’s how they turn out for him. Cory thinks things will work out and they do. If you get involved in the process of learning and enjoy it, you will learn more easily. If all you care about is the outcome, learning will be difficult and it will take a long time. Enjoy the process. Learn from your mistakes. Don’t use them as weapons to beat yourself up. We all make mistakes all the time. Embrace the mistakes. Laugh. You can enjoy them. Some of them are pretty funny. Don’t take it too seriously. After all, it is a game.
